Visit to the Bulgarian-Turkish border

The Haskovo region and the municipality of Svilengrad are key areas in Bulgaria’s relations with neighboring Turkey. They are also stakeholders in a Norway Grants project on cross-border cooperation.

A delegation of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat has visited the Kapitan Andreev checkpoint at Bulgaria’s border to Turkey. The checkpoint is under reconstruction and is due to more than double capacity in the course of 2014. In 2013, almost 4,2 million people crossed the border pass.

The visit was made as part of the Secretariat’s Norway Grants project ”Bulgarian Border Dialogues”, an initiative which is operated together with the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development.

The visit also included meetings with Haskovo District Governor Kadir Isov and local authorities in Svilengrad, the border municipality to Turkey. Cross-border relations with Turkey are of key importance for the region, the local government leaders underlined to the Barents Secretariat.

The Barents Secretariat is Donor Programme Partner (DPP) in the programme on Capacity Building and Institutional Cooperation (BG11) and is project partner in the Bulgarian Border Dialogues, a project on cross-border cooperation between Bulgaria and its neighbouring countries of Turkey, Macedonia and Serbia.

The project is operated by the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development in cooperation with the Barents Secretariat.
