The sports program

The Norwegian Barents Secretariat has organized the Norwegian – Russian sports cooperation into an area of priority with a special grant program. Annually 1 million NOK is granted by the Norwegian Barents Secretariat to sports projects.

International sports activities involve a lot of participants and contribute to remove political, social and cultural barriers. Stimulating physical activity and a healthy lifestyle is also important. The reorganizing of the sports program and doubling the funds to more than a million NOK, has both simplified the project work for the applicants and stimulated to an increase in the number of border crossing sports projects.

The sports program supports Norwegian-Russian cooperation projects in the Barents Region, or Norwegian and Russian participation in multilateral projects in Norwegian or Russian part of the Barents Region.

Prioritized areas

  • International sports arrangements and projects which strengthens the sports cooperation in the region.
  • Projects targeted on cooperation for children and youth.
  • Projects focusing on organization development, organization training and improving democratization processes.
  • Bilateral and multilateral initiatives.
  • Norwegian-Russian cooperation projects in the Barents Region, or Norwegian and Russian participation in multilateral projects which are arranged in Norwegian or Russian part of the Barents Region.

Typical projects which can be supported

  • Sports festivals, tournaments, training or instructor trainings.
  • Seminars or other competence building initiatives.
  • Meetings, conferences or seminars.
  • Networking.
  • Organization development.

Criterion

  • Projects must have a good cooperation profile Projects which are prospective and can be sustainable after the project period will be prioritized.
  • Projects must be able to show results of their work.
  • Projects with Russian financing will be prioritized, though a high share of Russian financing is not expected in projects where NGOs are involved.
  • The project budget must be as cost efficient as possible.

Application deadlines
Applications are administered continuously. Case administration of 4-6 week is normal.
