News from the Barents Region

Every day the Norwegian Barents Secretariat provides you with news from the Barents Region. For people who are active on cross border development, this is your number one news source. is an open internet news service, which offers daily updated news from and about the Barents Region and the Arctic. The site is run by the Norwegian Barents Secretariat in Kirkenes, Norway.

The site presents news stories from the northern parts of all the four countries in the region: Russia, Norway, Sweden and Finland. All news stories are published in English and Russian. The Norwegian Barents Secretariat aims at supporting political, business and people-to-people contacts across the borders in the region.

An archive search function gives you full access to the news archive, which presently contains more than 15.000 news reports. BarentsObserver also provides background cross-border information about the Barents cooperation and bilateral contacts between the member regions. was opened under the name 1 October 2002. In September 2003 the site changed name and since 2005, BarentsObserver has been owned by the Norwegian Barents Secretariat. Staff-writers are all employees of the secretariat.
